Power Supply Board

TV Power Supply Board

Understanding the Power Supply

The power supply board is responsible for converting household AC power (110-240V) into the various DC voltages required by different TV components. It typically provides:

  • 12V: For the main board and audio system
  • 24V: For the backlight system
  • 5V: For standby power and some ICs
  • 3.3V: For logic circuits
Technical Note

Power supplies are the most common failure point in modern TVs. Look for bulging capacitors, burn marks, or no power indicators. Always discharge capacitors before servicing.

Common Problems
  • No Power: TV won't turn on, no standby light
  • Intermittent Power: TV turns off randomly
  • Voltage Fluctuations: Unstable voltages causing malfunctions
  • Audible Humming: Faulty transformer or capacitors

Main Board

TV Main Board

The Brain of Your TV

The main board (also called the motherboard) is the central processing unit of your TV. It handles:

  • Video processing and scaling
  • Audio processing
  • Smart TV features and apps
  • Input/output management
  • Signal decoding
  • Operating system and firmware
Troubleshooting Tip

If your TV has picture but no sound (or vice versa), the main board may be faulty. Try a factory reset or firmware update before replacing the board.

Common Main Board Issues
  • No Signal: TV doesn't detect input sources
  • Freezing: TV becomes unresponsive
  • Boot Loops: TV keeps restarting
  • Feature Failures: Specific functions stop working

T-Con Board

TV T-Con Board

Timing Controller

The T-Con (Timing Controller) board is critical for display operation. It manages:

  • Display timing and synchronization
  • Color processing and correction
  • Pixel driving and control
  • Display refresh rate
  • Resolution and scaling
Important

T-Con board problems often appear as picture issues: lines on screen, distorted images, color problems, or complete loss of picture while sound remains working.

Signs of T-Con Board Failure
  • Vertical or horizontal lines on screen
  • White or colored screens
  • Flickering or flashing picture
  • Split screen or duplicated images
  • Loss of some screen sections

Backlight System

TV Backlight System

LED Backlight Technology

Modern TVs use LED backlight systems to illuminate the LCD panel. There are two main types:

  • Edge-lit: LEDs along the edges of the screen
  • Direct-lit: LEDs directly behind the screen
  • Full Array: LEDs evenly distributed behind the screen
Repair Thought

Backlight failure is one of the most common TV problems and often presents as a dark screen with sound. Replacing LED strips is a delicate but common repair.

Common Backlight Problems
  • Dark Spots: LED failure in specific areas
  • Dimming: General loss of brightness
  • Flickering: Unstable brightness
  • One Side Dark: Edge-lit LED failure
  • Uneven Lighting: Inconsistent brightness across screen

Display Panels

Types of Display Technology

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

Uses liquid crystals to control light passing through. Requires a backlight. Most common and affordable.

LED (Light Emitting Diode)

Actually an LCD with LED backlight. More energy-efficient and thinner than traditional LCDs.

OLED (Organic LED)

Each pixel emits its own light. Better contrast, deeper blacks, and thinner panels. No backlight needed.

QLED (Quantum Dot LED)

LCD with quantum dot technology for better color and brightness. Samsung's premium technology.

Safety Note

Display panels are fragile and expensive. Never apply pressure to the screen or attempt to repair a damaged panel without proper training and equipment.
